In medieval symbolism, the hare was an animal believed to be capable of changing its sex. Is was also one of the most common forms that witches in fairytales might take when out at night performing magic. It is used here to represent to transformation that some trans and nonbinary people go through in discovering their true selves, enabling them to remove the masks behind which they were hiding.
